In today’s modern world, almost every individual is leading a fast-paced life and aspiring to access top-notch amenities for achieving success. But this way of life has multiple consequences too, not only for individuals but also for the environment. It gives rise to deteriorating air quality and pollution, especially with the rising number of vehicles on the road.

In such a situation, how can a car owner do their part in curbing pollution issues?

Having a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate for your car will aid in doing your little bit for the environment. The PUC certificate helps authenticate the levels of required carbon emission levels of an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle as prescribed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

It helps car owners state whether the units of carbon emissions from their cars are within the prescribed limits. They should check the emission levels often and get their vehicles certified every six months to adhere to the rules and avoid any penalties.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, it is mandatory for all car owners to have at least a third-party liability insurance policy. Along with this, car owners must also have a PUC certificate to continue enjoying the benefits of their respective insurance policies. It is very important for your insurance renewal process.

The validity of the PUC certificate for a new car is one year, and it gets renewed at regular intervals. The validity of the renewed certificate is six months, and in case the emission reading of the car is adverse, the certificate validity will depend on the reading.

The cost of obtaining the PUC certificate varies from Rs.60 to Rs.100, depending on the fuel type of the car.

Following are the details listed on the PUC certificate:

  • Date of emission test
  • Emission test reading
  • Registration number of the vehicle
  • PUC Certificate number
  • The validity date of the certificate

A fine will be levied if you’re not carrying the PUC Certificate with your car at all times. As per Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicle Act, you will be liable for prosecution and a fine of Rs.1000 for first-time offences and Rs.2000 for subsequent offences. It must also be carried with you at all times along with other important vehicle documents such as –

  • Insurance policy,
  • Registration certificate (RC) and
  • Driver’s driving licence.

This certificate is mandated not just for security reasons but also because it gives car owners a way to care for the environment, always be aware of their vehicle’s condition, and take necessary precautions if necessary. It also ensures that you remain a law-abiding citizen.

Now that it’s clear that a PUC certificate is mandatory for car insurance, make sure to obtain one as soon as you purchase a new car. Chola MS offers a comprehensive and thoughtful car insurance policy, making the process simple and hassle-free. Click on the link to know more!
